Nigeria is the second largest contributor to the under–five and maternal mortality rate in the world. The country has about 3 million pregnant and new mothers annually. But 1 in 13 of these women will die from pregnancy and childbirth complications. The country also has about 4010 births per day, and 1 in 5 of these babies will not live to see their fifth birthday. The country loses about 2,300 under-five year olds and 145 women of childbearing age every day.

Most of these deaths, though preventable, take place in the northern parts of the country.

Majority of the women in the region have little or no access to basic prenatal healthcare and often prefer the traditional home birth methods. As a result, they need help to be able to transition through the process without loosing their lives or their babies.
